The Pirates solve the logjam at the catcher position
The Pirates addressed their crowded catcher situation by acquiring right-handed pitcher Hunter Stratton from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for catcher Joey Bart. The club announced the trade late Thursday night. Stratton will report to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Stratton is no stranger to the Pirates organization. He was originally selected by Pittsburgh in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB Draft out of Walters State Community College in Tennessee. The 29-year-old made one appearance for Atlanta this season, tossing a scoreless inning.
The trade clears the way for the Pirates to move forward with Henry Davis and Endy Rodríguez behind the plate while adding pitching depth to the organization. Bart had become expendable as the Pirates looked to sort out playing time among their catchers.
